For all the fans of Bill Simmons, Scott Van Pelt, or Colin Cowherd out there, we’ve been crunching the numbers for you on their gambling picks. Here is the 2014 ESPN Braintrust's final leaderboard for the of the regular season of NFL & College Football.

SVP and Cowherd only pick against the spread, so I assumed $1K per bet and -110 odds. To make it apples to apples, here are their winning percentages on only spread bets for this season:
  1. Bill Simmons: 0.526, 30-24-3
  2. Scott Van Pelt: 0.512, 42-39-1
  3. Colin Cowherd: 0.476, 40-42-2
While Bill has the advantage here by actually incorporating wager amounts into his bit, here are the ROI rankings: https://app.gohedgetracker.com/groups/5fd8efce9d4745001726022e

Interesting tidbits from the analysis:

College Football Gambling: Week 9 Picks Against the Spread

Here are my picks against the spread for Week 9 (Last Week: 1-1; Overall: 7-16):
Coming off a scorching week...1-1! Woot! Lol...I'm ready to get on a roll...
Note: Pick to the left, home team in CAPS
MICHIGAN +1 Notre Dame
The Wolverines don’t deserve credit for a moral victory last week against Penn State, but we can acknowledge that Michigan played much better against the Nittany Lions than they did against Wisconsin. The offense played much better than they did against Iowa, as well. So, while they’re not going to win the Big Ten as many predicted in the preseason, the Wolverines are getting better as the season progresses.
Remember, a big reason for the optimism heading into the season was the addition of offensive coordinator Josh Gattis. He’s a first-time OC implementing a new system. His hiring was probably hailed too much in the offseason and he’s also probably been written off too soon. Gattis was expected to be receiver friendly and last week we finally saw Michigan lean heavily on their wide outs with a 50/50 pass/run split. The trio of Nico Collins, Ronnie Bell, and Donovan Peoples-Jones were targeted 25 times…and if Bell holds onto to Shea Patterson’s final pass, Michigan had a chance to pull off a 21-point comeback.
I liked what I saw from Patterson (7 of 9 for 102 yards on third downs), as well as true freshman running back Zach Charbonnet who looks healthy and ready to fulfill on his potential. He followed up his 116-yard game at Illinois with strong running against the Nittany Lions strong run defense with 81 yards (5.4 YPC) and two touchdowns.
Coach Jim Harbaugh’s struggles against top-10 teams are well documented but the Wolverines have been very good at home during his tenure. Michigan has won 11-straight at home and is 23-2 in the Big House since 2016 (John O’Korn was the starter for both losses). The Wolverines will build on last week’s game and knock off the Irish to give them a much-need rivalry and “big” win.
MICHIGAN STATE +5 Penn State
I know Penn State might look like the more dominant team, but are they really the sixth-best team in the country? The Nittany Lions have played three teams with a winning record (1-2 ATS) and could have lost any of those three, as they were out-gained the past two weeks by Iowa and Michigan. They average 20.6 points in those three games compared to 54.5 points in their four games against teams with a losing record. That’s a stark difference. It’s possible this Penn State team has some bully in them.
PSU is coming off back-to-back games against very physical defenses and now have to face a third. That’s a tough spot for any team. At this level, teams aren’t used to facing that level of physicality three-consecutive weeks. Michigan State is also coming off back-to-back games against tough defenses, with much worse results. The difference being, the Spartans had a week off to prepare to ready themselves for the Nittany Lions.
MSU has had a very disappointing season, a season some have speculated could be Mark Dantonio’s last in East Lansing. This feels like a last stand type of game for Sparty. They’re coming off back-to-back blowout losses on the road, with an open week to ready themselves for the biggest remaining home game of the season. I expect the Spartans to play one of their best games of 2019.
This isn’t just a great spot for Michigan State, as Dantonio has gotten the better of James Franklin in this matchup. MSU is 4-1 straight up and 4-1 against the spread versus PSU over the past five years, which includes outright upset wins the past two seasons as a 9.5- and 13-point underdog. Don’t be surprised if they do it again.
